Port of Ghent among strongest rising European seaports in first quarter of 2010 Print E-mail
Port of Ghent figures second in the ranking of all European seaports concerning the increase of seaborne cargo traffic in the first quarter of 2010. This becomes clear from the figures issued by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) at its annual conference, which took place on May 27 and 28, 2010 in Helsinki (Finland).

For the first quarter of 2010 Ghent recorded a seaborne cargo traffic of 6 million tonnes, an increase by 24% as against 2009 (+1.16 million tonnes). In 2009 this transhipment still amounted to 4.88 million tonnes, which represented a decrease by 25% then as compared to the peak year 2008 (6.5 million tonnes).

In terms of percentage, Ghent ranks second as for the revival of the maritime goods traffic among the European seaports, after Zeebrugge and before La Spezia and Bremen among others. On average, the growth percentage for all European seaports barely amounted to 0.8%. In tonnages, Ghent takes up the 21st place out of 49 European seaports. In 2008 and 2009 Ghent still ranked 27th.

In this way, port of Ghent confirms its stability as a medium-sized European seaport.
